Introduction


This case involves a racially motivated attack that occurred on June 6, 2003, by a large group of Caucasian youths against five Asian-American youths at the corner of 19th Avenue and Taraval Street in San Francisco. Matthew M. was adjudged a ward of the juvenile court pursuant to Welfare and Institutions Code section 602 after the court found that he committed two counts of aggravated assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury against two victims (Pen. Code, § 245, subd. (a)(1)[1], two counts of committing â€
