Defendant Friederike Kruse appeals from the trial court's denial of her petition, pursuant to Penal Code section 1604, for release to the supervised outpatient Conditional Release Program (CONREP). We affirm the trial court's decision.


BACKGROUND


Kruse's History


Kruse testified at the petition hearing below that she was born in 1949 in Germany, has a master's degree in English from a German university, and was a schoolteacher at one time. At some point, she became a member of the Rajneesh cult, eventually donating her life savings to it and moving to its Oregon commune in the 1980's. Evidence submitted in the hearing indicated that in 1984, some commune members contaminated a local salad bar with salmonella, infecting about 700 people, and served prison time as a result. There was no evidence that Kruse participated in this crime, and she testified that she was unaware of the poisoning until after she moved to California. The commune was disbanded and members were forced to leave abruptly. Kruse moved to California and worked in a variety of menial jobs.


Kruse testified that she became suicidal soon after her father died in 1989. The Rajneesh guru's death on Kruse's birthday in 1990 further upset her. She believed that demons were possessing her and giving her commands. She stopped working and lived in her car.
